Rock Salt is also known as Halite and Sodium Chloride Rock Salt is typically used as a road ice melter for ice melting and snow melting.

Road Salt Usage

Used as a road salt, rock salt is effective as a highway road salt for melting ice and melting snow on roads, highways, bridges, parking lots. It is will not chemically attack concrete, but may be harmful to vegetation. Rock salt will not perform as a deicer and will not melt ice at temperatures below 20^o F.

Halite Rock Salt

While halite or rock salt does not chemically attack concrete, it may affect damage to concrete from freeze-induced expansion pressures by increasing the number of freeze and thaw cycles.

Sodium Chloride

Sodium chloride or rock salt is economical relative to other deicers. As temperatures drop below freezing, its ice-melting performance slows substantially. Most frequently used for highway deicing and as roadway deicer, sodium chloride or road salt is typically treated with liquid calcium chloride or mixed with calcium chloride to improve its road anti-icing and road deicing ability at low-temperatures.
