OUR HISTORY
Louis and Dora Schoenberg founded the Schoenberg Salt Co. in 1898. At that time, Brooklyn New York
was all farmland, pasture and woods with little towns sprinkled
throughout the countryside. Salt was used on the farms and for
the growing population, which was expanding due to the completion
of the Brooklyn Bridge which linked Brooklyn to Manhattan.
The company was incorporated in New York State in 1934. Louis
and Dora's three sons, George, Meyer (Mal) and Hyman, succeeded
their parents and continued to manage and grow the business.
The
1940's saw expansion
into the retail salt business as Schoenberg Salt pioneered the
sale and distribution of Red Cross 26 oz. rounds to the grocery
trade on behalf of International Salt Company.
In the mid-1950's, Schoenberg began to package evaporated
salt, rock salt, and calcium chloride from bulk hopper railcars
at our Brooklyn warehouse. Mal's son, Irwin, worked summers during
this time and entered the business full time in 1958 upon graduating
from the Bernard Baruch School of Business, City College of New
York.
The
1960's saw the Red Cross
business grow to 400,000 cases per year. Schoenberg also expanded
into bulk rock salt stockpile handling and trucking. We also
sold bulk products in the Metro New York area.
In the
1970's the company developed
its own tractor-trailer delivery network as deliveries from producing
facilities direct to customers became the industry standard,
replacing many local warehouses and redelivery/rehandling costs
and expenses. Alan Schoenberg joined the business full time in
1973 after graduating from Portland State with a masters degree.
The
1980's saw an expansion
of sales into New Jersey and the addition of our warehouse/distribution
center in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. This allowed Schoenberg to
be a reliable Mid-Atlantic Distributor.
The
70's and 80's also saw
the addition of key management talent to the company - James
Hayden, now President and Mark Schneider, now Vice President.
Their abilities and energy took Schoenberg Salt into the
1990's with new product lines and new marketing areas. Schoenberg
expanded its involvement in the textile and food processing markets.
We also developed a dust control business, which allows us to
work closely with municipalities in New England for maintenance
of their charming secondary road systems.
Entering the new Millennium, Schoenberg once again expanded with
the acquisition of the Luffman Salt Company in Greensboro, North
Carolina. This new addition gave us coverage up and down the
entire East Coast allowing us to service our customers more effectively
and efficiently.
The twenty-first
century has catapulted
Schoenberg into many new directions. We are very excited to announce
the addition of food ingredients to our product line. The addition
of Luffman Salt to our family has opened up great opportunities.
By utilizing their food ingredient product knowledge, we have
been able to combine our ability to provide our competitive pricing
and great service. These new ventures are moving us toward our
goal of becoming a nation wide distribution company.
